About Greenville, North Carolina

About 85 miles south of Raleigh and 87 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean sits the city of Greenville, North Carolina. The city is home to more than 84,500 residents and is growing quickly. Greenville is the county seat of Pitt County and is the principal city in a larger metropolitan area consisting of more than 194,000 people.

Greenville, original named Martinsborough, was founded by the Royal Governor Josiah Martin in 1771. Later, in 1774, the town was moved three miles west of its original site to the south bank of the Tar River. In 1786, Martinsborough became Greenesville to honor Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene. The name was eventually shortened to Greenville.

In its early days, Greenville was known as a major exporter of cotton, though before the 20th century, tobacco became the leading crop, and Greenville utilized the Tar River to export large quantities of tobacco. However, the city evolved in the mid-20th century, first with the developments of the East Carolina Teachers College (third largest State-supported college) and the pharmaceutical research and manufacturing company, Burroughs Wellcome. The city is now an important location for medicine, industry, education and culture in North Carolina.

Greenville is a thriving, growing city. Forbes ranks Greenville in the top ten in “Best Small Places for Business and Careers.” The city has a lively culture, as well. The Greenville Museum contains numerous exhibits of local art and downtown Greenville hosts an annual Halloween street party. The city is also home to many professional BMX riders, including Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist.

Greenvillians occupy the 27833, 27834, 27835 and 27858 zip codes.
