Wilson, the 18th largest city in the state of North Carolina, has a population of about 49,000 over about 23.4 square miles. Wilson is the county seat of Wilson County and is located approximately 45 minutes from the state capital of Raleigh.
The city name is named after Louis Dicken Wilson, a 19th Century eastern North Carolina legislator who left his position in as a state senator to serve in the Mexican American War. Wilson was incorporated in 1840 with Joshua Barnes, friend of Louis Dicken Wilson and advocate for the formation of Wilson County, as its first mayor. Six years later, Wilson County was formed.
Today, Wilson calls itself North Carolina’s Gigabit City because of the city-owned telecommunications service that distributes television, Internet and phone services through a fiber-optic network. The city also contains a number of educational institutions, many parks and other recreational areas and it is an excellent place to try some famous eastern Carolina-style pork barbecue.
