Raleigh, North Carolina
North Carolina’s second largest city and capital is Raleigh. Also known as the “City of Oaks” for its numerous oak trees that line the streets downtown, Raleigh occupies 142.9 square miles, has an estimated population of 423,000 and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Raleigh is located primarily in Wake County, though a small portion of the city extends to Durham County.
The “City of Oaks” is part of the Research Triangle of North Carolina, along with Durham and Chapel Hill. The area, also known simply as “The Triangle,” is home to many high-tech companies and enterprises. Raleigh is home to North Carolina State University, one of three major research universities in the Research Triangle. Raleigh is also home to numerous other universities, including two historically African American universities, Saint Augustine’s University and Shaw University.
The city’s name derives from Sir Walter Raleigh, founder of the mysterious Roanoke Colony on the coast of present-day North Carolina, which disappeared in the late 16th century. The city was founded in 1792, and is the only state capital in the United States that was planned and established to be the state seat of government. The city is the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, and more recently, celebrities and athletes such as singer Scotty McCreery and Major League Baseball player Josh Hamilton.
Many recognize Raleigh as an excellent city for quality of life and employment opportunities. Forbes recognized Raleigh as America’s Safest City, and Businessweek.com once rated it as America’s Best City. Raleigh has a number of museums and other attractions for residents and tourists to enjoy, and the city even boasts a National Hockey League team, the Carolina Hurricanes.
