About Fayetteville, North Carolina

Fayetteville is the county seat of Cumberland County and is part of the largest metropolitan area in southeastern North Carolina. The city itself is located along the Cape Fear River and has a population of approximately 205,000 across an area of nearly 150 square miles. Fayetteville lies about an hour away from the state capital of Raleigh, and its metropolitan area includes Eastover, Hope Mills, Raeford, Rockfish, Spring Lake, Stedman and the military installations, Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.

The first settlers of what would become Fayetteville arrived in 18th Century from the Scottish highlands. Following the American Revolutionary War, the region was renamed to Fayetteville in honor of General La Fayette, an important figure who greatly assisted the American Army. Fayetteville was the first to be named in La Fayette’s honor, and the city’s namesake even visited the city in 1825.

Today, Fayetteville is a diverse and historical area that has received the All-America City Award from the National Civic League on three separate occasions. The city is supportive of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, and even built the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, which features exhibits about United States military history.

Fayetteville residents use zip codes 28301, 28302, 28303, 28304, 28305, 28306 and 28307. Pope Air Force Base utilizes the 28309 and 28310 zip codes, while Fort Bragg occupies the 28308, 28311, 28312 and 28314 zip codes.
