About Jacksonville, North Carolina

Jacksonville rests in the center of Onslow County, North Carolina. The city holds the county seat and has a population of over 70,000 residents. Jacksonville’s website states that some military personnel in Jacksonville were not counted in the most recent census, and estimates the population to be closer to 82,000. The population is also among the youngest in the country— the median age is 22.9.

An Onslow County courthouse was built at Wantlands Ferry, now the site of Jacksonville, and court was held there for the first time in 1757. The town was not incorporated until 1842, when it was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson.

For almost a century afterward, Jacksonville was a quiet place where most private business was conducted in the courthouse because it was the only place equipped to handle business transactions. Everything changed in 1940 when public officials placed Camp Lejeune in Onslow County. The population doubled and property values rose as workers came to work on defense projects. In 1990, the city annexed parts of Camp Lejeune, and now about half the total population lives in Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station.

Jacksonville is surrounded by many bodies of water and other natural landmarks. It is located at the mouth of the New River, which empties into Wilson Bay and then Morgan’s Bay. The city is just a short drive from Hofmann Forest and the Croatan National Forest, which are fantastic tourist destinations.

Residents of Jacksonville share the 28540, 28541, 28542, 28543, 28544, 28545 and 28546 zip codes.
